My father is a cheerful man, with tonnes of wisdom in his conversation. I grew up looking forward to having time spent together with him when he was back from work. My mother would lovingly put something together for tea—usually a simple local delicacy and a nice big koleh of Indian tea. It was unmistakably the party of the day. We would gather to have tea in our front porch, with our iron swing, mango and rambutan tree and bougainvilleas all around. My father would always take a keen interest in our day- 3 teenagers with hectic, energised lives and listen to our stories and share his.

Someway, along the time I was away from home, I began to suspect his difficulty with hearing as he began having trouble keeping on the thread of conversation via the phone. Family members use to joke that the best and most inexpensive hearing aid, costing under 20 cents, is to simply place a black button in your hear— instantly, everyone speaks louder to you! With subtle coaxing and introduction to the hearing aid technology over what seemed like 5 years, I was happy as a lark the day my father decided for himself he would give it a go! It was amazing watching him brighten up when he had it switched on— almost like a groom on the day of his wedding.

Hearing aids have changed so much in technology- with the birth of analogue ones, digital ones even those that are designed to mimic the ear function so naturally close. Hearing aids even come in shades of colours to match the skin! I am glad my father found a good audiologist and received one that matched his needs.

Being a pensioner, he was delighted with how Mr Mok Yong Yaw at 20dB Hearing (Kuching, Sarawak branch) discussed options with him and introduced him to helpful ways in ascertaining he can afford this costly equipment through the Tabung Bantuan Perubatan which is available to all Malaysians. Mr Mok’s patience in hearing out my dad’s lifestyle needs and hearing history combined with an updated assessment made us feel confident that he was interested in getting the best in helping my dad restore his hearing. His compassion coupled with technical insight on suitable aids made this process smooth. The administrative staffs at 20dB Hearing Kuching were efficient in handling the forms and following up personally with the department and my dad ensuring all was completed within 3 months. It is our blessing to have met a dedicated audiologist like Mr Mok.
